Park Love - Creative Writing Entry for February

Park Love

From the moment he set eyes on her he knew he had found love. Real love. It was not the usual excited feeling he got when he saw a female. The sort that took over him and most of his male friends more or less every time they saw someone of the opposite sex. That was a sharp feeling which, to put it quite frankly, made him want to mount the object of his desires and procreate. No, this was a different sort of longing. More of a round soft feeling, which made him want to follow her, gaze at her, smell her. For hours on end.

He had first caught sight of her at the park. She was walking along next to an old lady, who he assumed it was her job to look after. She walked along with a spring in her step, swaying her hips and looking radiant in the sun. She had turned to him suddenly and looked him in the eye for what felt like hours. Then she turned again and went off with the old lady.

That day he hadn’t even got a chance to get close to her. But he had seen her a few times since, at the same Park, and had tried to make a move. She always played hard to get. Not making too much eye contact. Moving away from him and standing next to the old lady so he couldn’t really get too intimate.

What he really wanted was to smell her. He had caught a whiff of her scent, but it was never quite enough. Not for him. He wanted to inhale her thoroughly. But with the old lady there, he didn’t feel it was proper to get too close.

John said these things take time. Not all females are the same, my friend. He used to say. Give her time and she’ll warm to you. You don’t want to be too friendly too soon.

Of course John was right. Bob believed everything John said was right. He was his best friend. They had been best friends for as long as he could remember. They lived together too. Shared a flat. Bob was the quiet type and John the chatty one. They could spend hours watching TV, sitting on the sofa together just enjoying each other’s company. They also loved going for long walks. John said it was good for the heart. And Bob believed him of course.

It was on one of those walks that they had met Mark. He was a tall handsome fellow, quieter that John. After a few months Mark had moved in with them. Three males sharing the same roof wasn’t always easy, that’s what John said, but it was fun. Now there were three of them on the sofa. Three of them going for long walks. At times Bob felt a bit left out, though. Once a week Mark and John would go out without him and come back laughing and joking without saying hello to him properly. The next morning things were back to normal and John usually invited him to go for a really special walk. Along the river bank, or in the woods for instance. Still, that was probably why he’d started looking for love. Before he was happy to run after the girls, but now it wasn’t enough. He felt the girl from the park was something more to him that just a passing interest.

Today was one of those days. The day after Mark and John had gone out without him.

‘Come on, my friend, let’s go out. I’ll take you somewhere new.’ John said while lacing up his trainers.

‘Oh, you want to go to the usual park.’ He continued after seeing the look on Bob’s face. ‘I bet you want to see that friend of yours. The one that’s always with the old lady.’

At those words Bob ran to the door.

‘Come on boy, let’s go see if we can get you a date with your furry lady.’ Said John as he clicked Bob’s lead into the hook on his collar.
